As the sun sinks closer to the horizon, we settle into a flat bottom boat bound for the Atchafalaya Basin. Looking around one of the first things that hits you is the stillness and near total silence. There are no traffic noises or electrical hums, just the sounds of the wind whispering through the cypress and the birds winging overhead.
There are five of us onboard, plus our captain. Three of us are from south Louisiana and Mississippi and we’re joined by a European couple. Despite our backgrounds, we have all come to spend some time on the water and learn about one of Mother Nature’s most imposing and impressive wetlands in all the world.
